Flashback Friday - Olympics

It's time for another Flashback Friday. Here's what Linda had for our topic this week - Olympics. Her text in black my answers are highlighted.

I'm always a little sad when it's an odd-numbered year because that means there will be no Olympics on TV. So let's have a few of our own!

Which individual events were your favorites?
My favorite events were gymnastics and diving for summer. I loved watching the girls and guys gymnastics. I also liked to do gymnastics but never had training, except the little bit we did at school in gym class.

For the Winter Olympics my favorites were ice skating and bobsled. I now have more favorites... since they added more events and I have grown to appreciate things more as an adult.

Since blogging is international, which country did you cheer for?
USA, All The Way!!!

Have you ever been to an Olympics or known anyone who competed?
No, to both. Wish I could go to one some day though, that would be awesome.

What are some of the hallmark memories of the Olympics that you remember?
Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding attack, Dorothy Hamal winning gold, and Scott Hamilton ice skating: Greg Louganis diving, Olga Corbet, Nadia Comaneci, and Mary Lou Retton in gymnastics... and more memories from recent years of course and watching with my children has been special.

Did the Olympics ever inspire you to take a certain sport (or practice more!)?
No

Do you prefer watching them the old way when everything was delayed in the days before 24-hour cable and internet?
I prefer watching them the old way. Trying to see stuff now is frustrating. Having to tape things to watch later. Would be better if we had cable and could use DVR instead of video tapes. But we only have an antenna and we only watch Thanksgiving Day Parades and Olympics on the TV, as well as watching DVD's.

Do you watch them more or less today than you did when you were growing up?
More. My kids and I love the Olympics. We even did a unit study/lapbook on the Olympics during the Beijing Summer Olympics. We wanted to do school and watch the Olympics so we turned it into a complete study. Here are the links to those posts:

I printed the money on regular weight computer paper we cut them out - not all of them just a few - and pasted them back to back so they really look like money, the coins I printed on cardstock to make a little more sturdy and we cut and pasted them back to back also.

I printed the Asian Animals cards 8 on a page, which because they are pdf and already 4 on a page means I printed two pages on piece of cardstock. They fit in the small pocket just fine that way if you trim the top front of the pocket so you can see the name of the animals and get them out easier. I also trimmed the back so it would not stick up to far. We wrote facts on the back of each card like we did with the Asia Classification Cards. You could do them large and just print each page as is but that takes more ink and I was trying to conserve.
I did a Google image search for the Asian animal my kids wanted to put on the front of the pocket and printed it 2" by2" to fit on the pocket.

On the right tab at the top is the Missionary Report Form Pocket
Each of us created the contents of the pocket in a different way I will tell you about each in the section under the slide show that contains the picture. Christopher did his biography of a missionary that went to China on a quarter page from my Dinah Zike's Big Book of Projects pg 87 Blank Sheet.

We only used the Pocket however because I wanted the boys to copy the verses as copywork.

I printed the pages, reducing them to fit the mini file folder. I am sorry I don't know exactly what % I reduced them to, I should have written it down, but start with 80% and go from there. I used the blank ones and printed a bunch on cardstock because I want to do one card for each year of the olympics summer and winter because I do not expect to do an Olympic Lapbook again

I printed out the "dolls" at 60% but wish I had made them a little smaller so I could fit them like I wanted on the front. I wanted them to link hands in a circle on the front of my lapbook but they would not fit. I am not sure what size they would have to be to do that. So I improvised and put 6 on the front and I have 3 left that I will put inside my lapbook once it is done.

Another idea is to put them in a pocket so your child could take them out and play with them.
they are not regular paper dolls with tabs so you can change the clothes the clothes get glued on, but they are sooo cute.

The link under that has very cute "paper dolls" (not just for girls) of different cultures and different sports that would be especially good for your Olympic unit and other friends for other units... these are soooooo cute :-)

Don't forget to check out the cookies... my dd Rachel 22 designed and cut by hand the sugar cookies. Then she put the base icing on. Then she, my dd 19 Jessica, my ds Nathan 14 and my ds Christopher 11 decorated them. The first cookies without a person were done by Rachel and Jessica. Then there are three pictures of the boys and their cookies.

I used the sites above to compile information and get photos of the mascots. I printed out the pictures of the mascots and we pasted them in a mini booklet. I used ¼ size pages with lines to make it easier for the kids to write the descriptions about the mascots. I got the ¼ pages from my Dinah Zike Big book of projects. (The sample booklet is mine... so my writing not my kids... that is why it looks so neat and I used my calligraphy markers for part of it.)

I used the information from the top site and put it in a writing program then put it in two columns and then adjusted it so the pictures and text stayed together and were not split by the columns or the page changes then printed it. The kids then had a choice of how to display the information. I put mine in a timeline format – an accordion fold, one of the kids did a booklet.

Note...

for the first map... this is the one I printed for the kids to do their map from... you have to click play then click stop before it gets to the detailed map of China and then click print. If you miss it the first time or the second time... etc. just keep trying. Click stop when the last dot on the mainland by China turns blue and not orange. Then print. Then push play again and then stop it when the arrow gets to the last dot on the China map... Beijing. Press stop then print. This was the best representation of a map for the torch run that I found.
