Hodgepodge Wednesday ~April's Coming

1. April rolls in at the end of this week and in celebration of that infamous date (April 1st) answer this question-What is something foolish you've done?  I really can't think of anything! Maybe I am boring? Bored   or too much a goodie-goodie?http://zaazu.com

2. With April comes Easter and that classic edible treat known as Peeps...so tell me...what's your favorite way to fix/eat chicken? That wasn't what you were expecting, was it? I 'fooled' you. teehee. Yup you fooled me... I thought it would be an Easter Candy question. Favorite way to fix/eat chicken??? I have a few... Out at restraurants: Chick-fil-a, Applebee's Oriental Chicken Salad, or fried chicken at a few favorite restaurants. Home: rotisserie chicken, my hubbies batter fried chicken, chicken divan, chicken salad sandwiches, chicken pot pie, cinnamon chicken, and for lunch I like also like to saute veggies and chicken.... yummmmmm. I know there are others because we eat a lot of chicken in this house, but these are the ones I could think of without going and getting the recipe book.

3. What's the best museum you've ever visited? Or your favorite? Or the one you'd most like to visit? Best: tie between Smithsonian in Washington D.C. and American Museum of Natural History. Favorite: Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Most like to visit: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park,
Kilauea Visitor Center because then I would be visiting Hawaii again... love to go back.

4. You know what they say about April showers...what's your preference-a shower or a bath? Shower... though I do like a bath once in a while... with calgon or other bath additives... take me away.http://zaazu.com

5. "Absence makes the heart grow fonder"...fact or fiction? Why? True... as long as it is not too long of an absence, then the heart can grow colder instead of fonder.

msn-emoticons Smileys6. What's your favorite product made/grown in your home state/province? At Factmonster it says:    "Delaware's broiler-chicken farms supply the big Eastern markets" I love me some chicken... see question 2 from today's Hodgepodge. You can also see a product map Here... notice the chickens.

7. What is going on in the world today that affects you the most?Homeschool troubles/lawsuits around our country and around the world. It scares me to think what the future generation of homeschoolers in America may have to deal with... what my children, homeschooling my future grandchildren, will have to deal with. I pray the Lord will keep homeschooling legal in America until his return.

8. Insert your own random thought here. I like tapioca pudding. Is that random enough for you??? LOL

Goal Planning Monday ~9~

I am late again getting this up. I don't know what is up with that. I need to work on it on Sunday afternoons so I have it ready to post on Monday morning. Oh well, at least I am getting it up. Better late than never.

I did really well on my goals last week. I exercised Mon., Tues., Wed., Fri., and Sat. I posted book reviews, I read Age of Opportunity: A Biblical Guide to Parenting Teens and Somewhere a Song. I logged 2 2/1 boxes of books into Book Collector.

My goals for this coming week are to:
  1. Work on my need/want list for school for next year. Hard to believe that after 20 years of homeschooling there is still books that I want and don't have. There is always something new out there... or old books that are being reprinted, I love those. Also, there are some workbooks for regularly used programs that I need to get. Christopher will need the Easy Grammar Plus Workbook  and Nathan will need LIFEPAC® High School Health Unit 1 Worktext, Unit 2 Worktext, Unit 3 WorktextUnit 4 Worktext, Unit 5 Worktext Each book Retail Price: $4.75. Those I know I need... now to figure out what else we will need.
  2. Exercise at least 4 days and I want at least one of them to be a 45 minute workout and at least one to be over an hour.
  3. Work on reading Age of Opportunity: A Biblical Guide to Parenting Teens by Paul David Tripp and Somewhere a Song by Judith Pella. The first book is for knowledge and help in my parenting the other is my next "personal reading for fun" fiction book. I don't know if I will finish either but I want to make time to read them both. Hopefully I can finish them soon.
  4. Log books into my Book Collector software. First I want to log in books that are in boxes. I want to get the boxes of books out of my bedroom and out of the hallway. I will be putting numbers on the boxes and noting the numbers of the box in the Book Collector information, they have a spot to type in book location, so I know where the book is if I need it for something.
  5. Have my day with Christopher. Play games, board or computer, whatever Christopher wants to do. Christopher gets to have a special treat, for now the treat is Tootsie Roll Pops. I keep them just for when I have my special days with the kids, when they are gone I will get something else, but I try and pick something that does not tempt me to go off my diet... therefore I will not pick Reece's Peanut Butter Cups, or something like that.
Goal Planning Monday  is hosted by Katrina of Mama Manuscripts.

Fit Mommy Friday ~ a good week

This was a good week. First of all I kept my food diary most days. Second I drank at least 46 oz most days. I think I missed one day. Third, I worked out 4 days. Monday was only 13 minutes because my it was my daughters birthday. I was working out on the Wii when she decided she wanted to play on the Wii as a family. Later we played board games and watched a movie. I did not get to work out further. Tuesday was 31 minutes. Wed. was 1 hour 4 minutes.  Thursday my sinuses were killing me and I could not get myself motivated to even work out a little. Today I worked out 1 hour 3 minutes. All these workouts are on the Wii Fit. We did not get to walk at Winterthur, the weather has been too cold and nasty here. I was excited to get to expert level on Rhythm Boxing and Birds-Eye Bulls-Eye. Both work out my arms and I need that. I like the boxing because I get to take out any aggression on the "bag" that I may have. I also like the precision and pattern of the moves. It is a lot of fun and it is a full 10 minutes which makes it easier to get my 45 minutes or 1 hour in. http://zaazu.com I am also on expert on the Segway Circuit, that is a tough one. It burns my calves. It is very difficult to catch the mole 3 times at the end. My calves are killing me by the time I get done. I have also tried the expert level on the Tightrope Walk, with the wind and the three chompers to jump over I have not made it across yet.    http://zaazu.com    But all exercise is good even if I don't get all the way across the tightrope or if I don't catch that dumb mole. http://zaazu.com

The best news is I lost another 2.9 lbs. Yippee!!! http://zaazu.com I will continue on. Through the good weeks and the bad weeks. I will keep eating well and exercising. I will keep on loosing weight. Thanks for all the encouragement last week. I really needed it.

    Goals for next week:
    1. Work out at least 4 days and I want at least one of them to be 45 minute workouts and at least one to be over an hour.
    2. Keep my food diary and track food and Weight Watchers points.
    3. Drink at least 46 oz. of water a day.

    Spring Reading Thing 2011

I am joining the Spring Reading Thing. I saw it posted over at 52 Books in 52 Weeks. I had to make a list of books I want to read (or finish reading) this spring. I can modify my list as I go along if it’s not working. Then I had to write a blog post with my list and submit it to her blog. Then I have to get reading. The challenge goes from today, March 20th, through June 20th. After the 20th, and before the 24th I have to write a post about my challenge experience, telling all about whether I reached my goals and how Spring Reading Thing went for me. This is a low-pressure challenge that should be fun. It will help me get reading more and achieve my goal of 100 books this year.

    Here are my lists.
First I want to finish reading:
    • Age of Opportunity
    • Instructing a Child's Heart
    • Somewhere a Song
    • When London Burned
    Then I want to read:
    • Fearless by Max Lucado
    • Toward the Sunrise by Judith Pella
    • Homeward My Heart by Judith Pella
    • Emma by Jane Austen
That is it so far. I will probably be adding to this list. We will be done our book work on May 5th and then I should have more time to read. I do have a lot of other things to do during my summer break but I do want to read also.

Click the button at the top if you want to join us. It will take you to Callapidder Days.

52 Books in 52 Weeks ~ The World of Captain John Smith

The World of Captain John Smith by Genevieve Foster We love these books. Genevieve Foster covers a lot of history in these books. This book starts with the birth of Captain John Smith and ends with his death but what comes in between is a whole lot more. Genevieve Foster always fills her books with history. It covers all the major events of world history that occur between the dates of the birth and death of Smith. For instance: The Spanish Armada is destroyed by English ships, El Greco was the great painter in Spain, Shakespeare writes his plays, Jamestown was founded, Rembrandt began to paint, the Taj Mahal was being built, and the Mayflower Compact is signed.

I added my books to my Reading Pages... see the tabs at the top of the page or click these links:

    Wednesday Hodgepodge ~ Spring

    1. Sunday was the first day of spring. So they say. Ahem.
What is your favorite outdoor springtime activity? Walks at Winterthur

Three of my favorite Winterthur Photos

    2. Who would you want to come into your kitchen to cook dinner for you? Anyone!!! LOL I don't really have a favorite famous cook. Anyone but me cooking dinner is a good thing, as long as the dinner is edible. I don't really like fancy food, just good home cooking. No snails or caviar.

    3. When did you last fly a kite? I have no idea. When the kids were younger for sure. It has been enough years that I don't know when it was.

    4. What topic puts you to sleep faster than anything? Topics don't put me to sleep... nights do.

    5. Which flowers do you associate with specific people, places, or events? Tulips, Lilies and Hyacinths make me think of Easter; Roses and Azaleas make me think of my Mother; and Azaleas make me think of Winterthur.

    6. What significant historical events took place during your elementary school days?
    • The Vietnam War was ongoing through all my elementary school years.
    • Astronauts Col. Virgil I. Grissom, Col. Edward White II, and Lt. Cmdr. Roger B. Chaffee killed in fire during test launch (Jan. 27, 1967)
    • Six-Day War - Israeli and Arab forces battle. It ends with Israel occupying the Sinai Peninsula, Golan Heights, Gaza Strip and West Bank (June 5, 1967)
    • The U.S. Congress creates PBS (1976)
    • Martin Luther King, Jr., civil rights leader, is slain in Memphis (April 4, 1968)
    • The successful flight of Apollo 8 makes Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot James Lovell, and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders the first people to orbit the moon. (July 20, 1969)
    • Woodstock (August 1969)
    • ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) goes online in December, connecting four major US universities. Designed for research, education, and government organizations, it is the foundation upon which the Internet will eventually be built. (1969)
    • The Beatles break up (1970)
    • Monday Night Football debuts on ABC (1970)
    • IBM introduces the floppy disk. (1970)
    • Bar codes are introduced in England. (1970)
    • The LCD is invented (1970)
    • A new stock market index called the Nasdaq debuts (Feb 8, 1971)
    • Supreme Court rules unanimously that busing of students may be ordered to achieve racial desegregation (April 20, 1971)
    • Boxer Joe Frazier defeats Muhammad Ali at Madison Square Garden (March 8, 1971)
    • After a successful mission aboard Salyut 1, the world's first manned space station, the crew of the Soyuz 11 spacecraft are killed when their air supply leaks out through a faulty valve. (June 30, 1971)
    • Walt Disney World opens in Orlando, Florida (Oct 1 1971)
    • President Nixon makes unprecedented eight-day visit to Communist China and meets with Mao Zedong (Feb. 21–27, 1972)
    • Five men are apprehended by police in attempt to bug Democratic National Committee headquarters Watergate complex—start of the Watergate scandal (June 17, 1972)
This was very interesting to research... thanks for this question.
    7. Do you swear? Do you pseudo-swear? (You know crap, shoot, friggin'?) I never swear... I never have. I would never use the Lord's name in vain. I do use shoot once in a while and darn, but I try not to even use those. I have also on occasion said, "Oh, Fudge."

    8. Insert your own random thought here. "Sloth makes all things difficult, but industry all easy; and he that riseth late, must trot all day and shall scarce overtake his business at night; while Laziness travels so slowly, that Poverty soon overtakes him. Drive thy business, let not that drive thee; and early to bed, and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise, as Poor Richard says." Quote from Way to Wealth by Benjamin Franklin. I proved this yesterday as I got up later in morning and felt like I could not catch up all day. I didn't get half the things accomplished I had hoped to get done and I ended up exercising at 8 pm writing this post and then heading to bed. Today is another day.

    Goal Planning Monday ~8~

Well, I am late getting this up. Yesterday was my dear daughter's 25th birthday and I spent the whole day with her. We played on the Wii as a family (except hubby), played games as a family (hubby played one game with us), then I played a couple games with Rachel while the dinner cooked. Then after dinner we watched Pride and Prejudice and ate some yummy cheesecake.

I had success in all 5 goals this past week. I exercised Monday though Friday. To see details about my fitness progress see my Fit Mommy Friday ~Discouraged post. I exercised but I didn't loose weight. I read Age of Opportunity: A Biblical Guide to Parenting Teens and Somewhere a Song. I meal planned for March and worked on my son's credits for graduation. I still have a lot to do on the credits but I must locate some paperwork from last year. Please pray that I find it without having to search my whole house.

My goals for this week are:
    1. Post book reviews for 52 Books in 52 Weeks. I got a couple of these posted last week. I think I have 2 more books to do currently, unless I finish one of the books that I am currently reading then I will need to review that one also.
    2. Exercise at least 4 days and I want at least one of them to be a 45 minute workout and at least one to be over an hour. We planned on a long walk at Winterthur in addition to my workouts, I am not sure when we will do this, Sunday was too cold. It may not happen until next week. This week is going to be cold and wet. It is not until next week on Thursday that is it supposed to be warm again. It is even in the forecast that we are to have some light snow
    3. The books in the boxes are books we do not currently need, like lower level Saxon Math that I am saving for my grandchildren, and fiction books that won't fit on my shelves (some are mine and some are juvenile fiction).
    4. Work on reading Age of Opportunity: A Biblical Guide to Parenting Teens by Paul David Tripp . The first book is for knowledge and help in my parenting the other is my next "personal reading for fun" fiction book. I don't know if I will finish either but I want to make time to read them both. Hopefully I can finish them soon.
    5. Read Somewhere a Song by Judith Pella just for fun.
Well, those are my goals for the week. What are you goals??? Post your goals, link up, and then work this week to achieve them. 52 Books in 52 Weeks ~ Pride and Prejudice

Oh how I love the movies based on the books by Jane Austen. I have loved them since we were introduced to them when my daughters did Movies As Literature in 2003-2004. Emma was the first we watched and then we had to see each movie and each new version that came out. We know own many of them.

But, this is a review of books. I joined the 52 Books in 52 Weeks challenge and decided that since I had never read Jane Austen's original books I would add them to my reading list for this year. I started with Pride and Prejudice. I found it hard to read the book I am sorry to say. The BBC movie from 1996 with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle does such a good job of covering the material in the book that it leaves almost nothing out. It is a 5 hour and 23 minute series Some of the diolouge comes right from the book. Some books are way better then the movies... in this case I like the movie better than the book. Maybe because I saw it so often before I read the book.

Anyway, the story is about a family of girls, the Bennets. The mother is trying to get them married off. The 2 youngest daughters are very silly.. like their mother, the middle daughter is plain and studious. A new gentleman, Mr. Bingly, moves into the neighborhood and brings with him a friend, Mr. Darcy. Will this gentlemen or or his friend end up marrying one of  the girls??? The oldest girl, Jane, and Mr. Bingly hit it off at the ball. Mr. Darcy insults Elizabeth, the second oldest, at a ball. Things come about to separate Bingly and Jane. Elizabeth declares she will never be prevailed upon to dance with Mr. Darcy, let alone marry her. Then Mr. Wickham arrives. How will he add to the story? The estate of the Bennets is to go to a nephew, Mr. Collins. There are many other friends and family members that add to the merriment. There are balls, trips through the country, trips to London and lots of conversation.

I very much enjoyed the reviews on this page of Amazon and so if you want to know more I suggest you check them out.

    The book:

    The Movies:

I added my books to my Reading Pages... see the tabs at the top of the page or click these links:
I have two more books that I have finished that I need to do reviews for. Hopefully I can get them finished soon.

      Fit Mommy Friday ~Discouraged

First off I weighed myself each morning this week so I could get an accurate read on my weight. I had been weighing myself at all different times of the day. So this week I got up, had my devotions and then went down and weighed myself before I ate... until today. I needed to get my Blast From The Past done and posted and I had Ladies Bible Study. I ran downstairs and got some cereal and came back to my room to work on my post. I was on my way to Bible study... and running late... when I realized I had not weighed myself.!!! AHHHHHHHHH!! http://zaazu.com all week and then to forget today! Frustrating. http://zaazu.com  Well, after lunch I weighed myself and from last weeks weight to today's is +0.4. I worked out so hard this week. Monday 30 min., Tuesday 46 minutes Wed. 45 minutes on the Wii Fit and then 45 minutes on Wii Sports doing boxing, bowling, golf and then a fitness test which includes stamina, power and speed; Thurs I did 1 hour 2 minutes on the Wii Fit, and today I did 47 minutes. My hubby says he thinks I am loosing weight. She says he thinks I am thinner. But it is frustrating not to see it on the scale and missing weighing myself this morning just adds to the frustration.

I am also still struggling with what to eat for lunch. For so many years we had store brand mac and cheese, store brand ravioli, pb &j or toasted cheese for lunch... cheap way to feed myself and 4 kids. Now eating healthy at lunch is such a challenge.

I did do better on keeping my journal. That is a little bit encouraging. Also encouraging was the fact that I motivated a few of you last week with my posting of my routine on my Wii Fit. Click HERE in case you missed it.

I found it easy to encourage my daughter earlier this week when she was discouraged about her fitness and weight loss. I find it hard to apply those same words to myself. http://zaazu.com

      Goals for next week:
      1. Work out at least 4 days and I want at least one of them to be 45 minute workouts and at least one to be over an hour. We should be adding in a good, long walk at Winterthur in addition to the workouts, probably on Sunday.
      2. Keep my food diary and track food and Weight Watchers points.
      3. Drink at least 46 oz. of water a day.

Blast From The Past and Flashback Friday ~ Family Pets

Flashback Friday is usually hosted by Linda @ Mocha With Linda This week Linda is on Spring Break and Bethany @ Raindrops and Rainbows is taking over. So if you are interested in participating this week come by Raindrops and Rainbows and link up you post.

Besides counting this for Flashback Friday I found a picture of my kitty and I. So this will be the Blast From The Past for this week also. I am not sure of the date, maybe 1969 or 70. I look about 8 or 9 years old.

Tuffy and I on the back steps at the house where I grew up
The Questions from Flashback Friday about Family Pets
Did you have any pets when you were a child? What were they? Yes, we had cats. One cat at a time. One when I was really little and another cat later. My hubby and I also had a cat when we were first married. Maybe I will do a Blast From The Past on him some day soon.

Did you have a favorite pet? What was the pet's name? Yes, his name was Tuffy. He was a Tabby Cat.

Where did you get it? From my aunt. He had been locked in a boxcar that came all the way from California and was found at her work when the boxcar was opened. He had lost his voice from meowing for so long, had been declawed (so was probably a loved family cat) and we malnourished from the long trip. We soon fattened him up.

Did it live inside or outside? Inside. At first because of being declawed my mother only put him out on a leash attached with a rope to one of the poles for our clothesline. Then we figured if he could at least get away from trouble he would be better off than trapped by the leash and rope. So we let him out and he came back and forth. He never ran away though, I remember being afraid of that happening.

Whose responsibility was it to care for the pet? Mine? I think.

What special things did you do with your pet? Not much. Except hold him and pet him... He was very, very loving and would sit in my lap or next to me for hours.

Did the pet go on trips with you? No, we left him home and had someone come and take care of him. Or, if it was a short trip, we would leave him food and water in these cool dispensers we had. Similar to these:
      http://www.amazon.com/Bergan-Petite-Gourmet-Gallon-Waterer/dp/B0009YS90K/ref=pd_sim_k_4

      http://www.amazon.com/Bergan-Petite-Gourmet-Feeder-Pounds/dp/B0009YUDI6/ref=pd_bxgy_k_img_b

How long did you have the pet? I don't really know. I guess I was around 8 or so when we got him and he died... (see below) We probably had him 12 or 13 years. He was a couple years old or so when we got him.

Did you ever have a pet that died? I don't know what happened to the cat we had when I was really little. He was gray with white feet and we called him Mittens. I assume he died. I will have to ask my mom. Tuffy, my favorite and the one that I remember the most, died while I was away at college.

What was your reaction to losing the pet? I don't remember being really sad. Maybe because he died while I was away. Maybe because his dying, in comparison to my father dying when I was 14, was not nearly as traumatic. I know I was sad, but not distraught. I would miss him but he had lived a long life.

Did your family ever have any unusual pets? Nope... just cats.

Did you ever have class pets at school? I don't remember. I know we took our pets to school once or twice but I don't remember if we had class pets. If we did they were probably gerbils or hamsters.

For my Blast From The Past participants:

52 Books in 52 Weeks ~ Won by the Sword

I am submitting this book to the meme on the right and left. Originally published in 1889. It is a long book, 373 pages. So it definitely counts for the 52 Books challenge this is book 5/52. Also I read it aloud to my boys as part of our History. We read Historical Fiction and History every day. The boys especially like the Historical Fiction and especially Henty. Since it is a read-aloud it counts for the Thursday meme, too.

Won By the Sword : a tale of the Thirty Years' War  (free kindle e-book) by G.A. Henty

Won by the Sword: A Story of the Thirty Years' War (paperback)

This book is a sequel. We read the first book, Lion of the North, and you can find my review of that Here. This book continues the Thirty Years War, and is centered in France. The hero is a Scotsman, Hector Campbell, orphaned son of a Scotch officer in the French army. After his father dies he is raised by the company his father was a part of. The men train him and he is educated in the "art" of war. As Hector Campbell answers an officer's questions about the make-believe war that he and his fellow-comrades are playing at, Hector never imagines it could be a famous general, Viscount Tureene. But before long Hector becomes a part of Turenne's household where he, along with his "sidekick" Paolo, is involved in several dangerous, adventurous missions for the general. Other main characters are Cardinal Richelieu, chief minister of Louis XIII; Cardinal Mazarin, assistant to Richelieu who with cunning and a recommendation from Richelieu, succeeds his master.

I don't want to ruin the story for you by telling you all the good parts. Suffice it to say, this books is as good, or better, than Lion of the North. There is/are danger, sieges, battles, plots, rescues (one rescue of a young lady of course), bravery, and much more. This book is full of courage, a book that you will benefit greatly from. And for anyone who likes history, this book is a must!

The best recommendation I can give you is that each day when I stop reading the chapter of Henty for the day the boys beg for another! Do I read another??? Nope! I am a meanie!!  LOL They have other work to do and the story will have to wait for tomorrow. http://zaazu.com

I added books to my Reading Pages... see the tabs at the top of the page or click these links:
I have some more books to do reviews of... I am working my way through them.
