Board Games for School - History

Since we are such game lovers I have decided to do a series of posts on the games we love for each of the major subjects of school. I hope you enjoy this. If you have questions about a certain game leave a comment and I will try to answer them. I will add answers to questions in an update about that game and in a different color so you can see the difference.

Most links are to my Amazon affiliate account. You are welcome to check out the game, the look of it and the prices and then compare to any other site that you usually buy from.

History Games for Homeschooling or Just For Learning

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? - Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? is a mystery/geography board game that will be a sure-fire hit with all your supersleuths. Detectives earn the right to race around the world map printed on the board by answering geography questions ranging from the deducible--"With 500 islands, how many islands make up the country of Japan?"--to more challenging: "Name the Irish city that has a funny five-line rhyme named after it." Players can either answer the question directly, earning a five-space move, or correctly answer a multiple-choice question to move three spaces. The winner is the first agent to reach the criminal's hideout. This game is for two to six players, ages 12 years and up.

Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? - Junior Edition - Your younger children can play Carmen World too! and they don't need to read to do it! Players secretly hide color-coded pictures of Carmen Sandiego beneath countries, then search for pictures of their color. Everyone will have so much fun searching for Carmen that they won't even notice that they're learing the sizes, shapes, and locations of the world's nations and oceans. For ages 8 and up.
Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego? - Carmen Sandiego and her gang of henchmen are headed for the U.S.A.! Landmarks from around the nation have vanished. Can you picture Arizona without the Grand Canyon? Your assignment is to scout out the scenes of the crimes and locate the Warrant, the Loot, and the Henchmen. Be careful! When you guess incorrectly, a Henchman escapes! Manufacturer recommended age: 8 - 12 years
Carmen Salndiego USA, Junior Edition Missing: The Gateway Arch from St. Louis, Wisconsin's cheese, salmon from Alaska! Carmen Sandiego and her henchmen have stolen famous landmarks and national treasures from America's cities and states. Help ACME CrimeNet find America's jewels and return them to their rightful homes. Players learn the lay of the land as they move across the United States returning landmarks to their rightful state, searching for Carmen as they go! Manufacturer recommended age: 4 - 8 years
Where In Time Is Carmen Sandiego? My favorite of the Carmen games... Carmen is hiding somewhere in time -- your mission is to check each century on the game board until you find her. Accumulate the most points by collecting the most "Century" cards as you compete to identify the centuries in which historical events occurred. These events are written on cards which players are required to arrange in cronological order. The game ends when a player reaches the "Finish" space on the game board. For 2 - 4 players. Ages 8 and up

10 Days in the USA - I love this game. I want to collect all the ones in this series... there is a Europe game, an Asia game, an America's game (covers North, Central & South America and the Caribbean) and an Africa game. You have 10 days to travel the country by jet, car, and on foot. Plan your trip from start to finish using destination and transportation tiles. With a little luck and clever planning, you just might outwit your fellow travelers. Great game for getting familiar with the geography of the United States. The first traveler to make connections for their 10 day journey wins the game.
    • Age range: 10 and up
    • Number of players: 2 to 4
    • Play time: 20 to 30 minutes
    • 47 Destination Cards, 16 Transportation Cards, 8 Card Holders, 1 Game Board Map, Quick Play Rules
Life in Colonial Williamsburg -This is the only link I could find on this game. At least it has pictures. I could not find anyone currently selling this game. Having been to Williamsburg we enjoy this game. Step back in time! This exciting game is a virtual visit to Williamsburg. First, choose one of eight characters: merchants, milliner, tavern keeper, slave... Then, with the roll of a die, explore the colonial capital. Stop at points of interest, experience everyday and historic events and collect Colonial LifeTokens along the way. The first to collect all seven wins! Category cards--Meet the People, Colonial Events and Pages in History--add spice to the game with questions and commands. Be careful--you might wind up in the stocks, or even on trial at the Capital. Three levels of play; great fun for Ages 8 and up.

Made For Trade: A Game of Early American Life - combines play with a good look into Colonial American life in the 18th Century. It's a delightful lesson in history and economics!Picture this: the eggs you're having for breakfast were laid just two hours ago. Your clothes are wool and linen, and sewn by hand. Every room in your house has a fireplace, the only source of heat in the winter.Have a chance to journey through a colonial town as you buy and barter for the things that you need. This game allows for four different styles of play, and includes gameboard, 60 shillings, 2 dice, 48 object cards, 8 character playing pieces, 8 shopping lists, 30 Historical Event I cards, 30 Historical Event II cards, and instruction booklet. For 2 to 6 players ages 8 and up.

Knights and Castles - Players must move three knights around the board and back to the player's home spot in a manner similar to Parcheesi. "Dubbing spots" are safe spots in the corners of the board and are used in an advanced game as places to raise your pawns from Page to Squire to Knight by answering medieval themed trivia questions. Multi-level play for Ages 6 and over. The boys love this game and we play often studying Medieval times and occasionally when we are studying other time periods. When we play we often use just 2 knights each... if using 3 knights the game takes a really long time.

Professor Noggin Games: Professor Noggin's series of educational games encourages kids to learn interesting facts about their favorite subjects. Each of the games contains thirty game cards combining trivia, true or false, and multiple choice questions. A special three-numbered die is included which creates interaction and promotes communication between players. Easy and hard levels keep kids and parents interested and make it easy to play with mixed ages - while of course having fun.Our family loves these and we have a number of these games in History and Science subjects as well as the set of Art History cards.

The American Girl Game (sorta history, sorta literature – questions are about the books) Players move around the board trying to collect tokens and sets of matching cards. Trading cards are drawn each turn and several spots on the board provide a chance to trade cards among the players. Trivia cards about the American Girl stories provide opportunities to earn extra tokens and test your knowledge of the stories.  The game comes with six detailed pewter figurines that are used as the player pawns. For 2-6 players, ages 8 and up.Very fun game especially if you have read the books and watched the movies.

Join us by clicking on the button above...
        after you read my goals.

Wow, it has been a long time since I was late getting my Goal Planning Monday post up. I have been really faithful. We had 4 people sick and I just lost track of what day it is.

My Goals from last week and how I did:
        Spiritual Goals
        1. Keep up with reading the Bible in a Year. Done
        2. Read Power of a Praying Wife and leave hubby a note for each chapter I read. He needs the extra prayers and encouragement. http://zaazu.comNot Done
        3. Read as much as possible of the new books I got for our Sunday School study. How People Change and How People Change Study Guide: How Christ Changes Us by His Grace I am behind because I got my book late. I want to keep up with the current chapters and catch up as much as possible when I am able to do extra work. Not Done
        Homeschool Goals
        1. Homeschool all week giving the boys their assignments since I have to take my hubby to many appointments this week. Done
        2. Keep up with grading and recording the homeschool stuff this week. Done
        Blog Goals
        1. Work on, and get posted, a post that is not a meme. I am especially trying to work on posts about games we use(d) for school. I wanted to get them up in time for my readers to use them for ideas for Christmas gifts. I hope to work on this this afternoon and evening. Not Done
        2. Post weekly for the Advent Challenge. Not Done
        Personal/Other Goals
        1. Comment on all the other GPM ladies posts. Keep track of their names with links here so I know whose I have done. Not Done
        2. Read, Read, Read! I am making progress on my read 100 books in a year goal but I still need to read a bunch more. I am now reading Midsummer Melody (The Tales from Grace Chapel Inn Series #8) I know I will not make 100 books but I will not quit. I have read all the Tales from Grace Chapel Hill books that I currently have out of the library and I have a lot of appointments to take my hubby to this week. After I finish Midsummer Melody I will be reading one of my Janette Oke series. I have to pick the series I want to read and find them this afternoon because hubby has a test tomorrow and I could be there 4 hours or more. I need light, easy reading to keep me interested. Done I read Once Upon a Summer I am currently reading The Winds of Autumn.
        3.  Take Hubby to have 4 Dr. visits/medical tests on 3 different days. Done
For this week that is 5 Done, 0 Partly Done, and 5 Not Done. That is not great and not terrible. At least things are even.

My goals for this coming week:
        Spiritual Goals
        1. Keep up with reading the Bible in a Year.
        2. Read Power of a Praying Wife and leave hubby a note for each chapter I read. He needs the extra prayers and encouragement. http://zaazu.com
        3. Read as much as possible of the new books I got for our Sunday School study. How People Change and How People Change Study Guide: How Christ Changes Us by His Grace I am behind because I got my book late. I want to keep up with the current chapters and catch up as much as possible when I am able to do extra work.
        Homeschool Goals
        1. I have no idea how much or if any homeschooling will get done. It depends on how the boys are doing with their colds.
        2. Keep up with grading and recording whatever homeschooling we get done.
        Blog Goals
        1. Get back to doing the regular memes that I participate in.
        2. Post Blast from the Past later today and prep next week's Blast From The Past.
        3. Work on, and get posted, a post that is not a meme. I am especially trying to work on posts about games we use(d) for school. I wanted to get them up in time for my readers to use them for ideas for Christmas gifts. I hope to work on this this afternoon and evening.
        Personal/Other Goals
        1. Comment on all the other GPM ladies posts. Keep track of their names with links here so I know whose I have done.
        2. Read, Read, Read! I am making progress on my read 100 books in a year goal but I still need to read a bunch more. I am now reading Once Upon a Summer/The Winds of Autumn/Winter is Not Forever/Spring's Gentle Promise (Seasons of the Heart Series books 1-4) I am currently reading Winds of Autumn.
        3. Take Hubby to Dr. tomorrow to check out his gall stones problem. Hopefully if he needs surgery it can wait until after Christmas.
        4. Get to the end of the week and all make it for the Christmas Program at church that we are supposed to participate in. Right now we have 4 sick people... my dd Rachel being the sickest. Rachel and Jessica are in the play and the whole family is singing at the end of the play. Rachel is going to the Dr., hopefully today, and hopefully will get some antibiotics or something, so she can get better before the dress rehearsal on Thursday.
I am not putting a lot of goals up this week. #1 goal is to get to the end of the week healthy so we can participate in the Christmas play, but that is not in my hands. I am praying, hard. Other than that I guess getting the blog posts done is most important to me.

How about you? Do you have any goals for the week? Post your goals and link up. The button at the top will take you to the meme and you can join up with us.
