Wednesday Hodgepodge ~ Spring

1. Sunday was the first day of spring. So they say. Ahem.
What is your favorite outdoor springtime activity? Walks at Winterthur

Three of my favorite Winterthur Photos

2. Who would you want to come into your kitchen to cook dinner for you? Anyone!!! LOL I don't really have a favorite famous cook. Anyone but me cooking dinner is a good thing, as long as the dinner is edible. I don't really like fancy food, just good home cooking. No snails or caviar.

3. When did you last fly a kite? I have no idea. When the kids were younger for sure. It has been enough years that I don't know when it was.

4. What topic puts you to sleep faster than anything? Topics don't put me to sleep... nights do.

5. Which flowers do you associate with specific people, places, or events? Tulips, Lilies and Hyacinths make me think of Easter; Roses and Azaleas make me think of my Mother; and Azaleas make me think of Winterthur.

6. What significant historical events took place during your elementary school days?
  • The Vietnam War was ongoing through all my elementary school years.
  • Astronauts Col. Virgil I. Grissom, Col. Edward White II, and Lt. Cmdr. Roger B. Chaffee killed in fire during test launch (Jan. 27, 1967)
  • Six-Day War - Israeli and Arab forces battle. It ends with Israel occupying the Sinai Peninsula, Golan Heights, Gaza Strip and West Bank (June 5, 1967)
  • The U.S. Congress creates PBS (1976)
  • Martin Luther King, Jr., civil rights leader, is slain in Memphis (April 4, 1968)
  • The successful flight of Apollo 8 makes Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot James Lovell, and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders the first people to orbit the moon. (July 20, 1969)
  • Woodstock (August 1969)
  • ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) goes online in December, connecting four major US universities. Designed for research, education, and government organizations, it is the foundation upon which the Internet will eventually be built. (1969)
  • The Beatles break up (1970)
  • Monday Night Football debuts on ABC (1970)
  • IBM introduces the floppy disk. (1970)
  • Bar codes are introduced in England. (1970)
  • The LCD is invented (1970)
  • A new stock market index called the Nasdaq debuts (Feb 8, 1971)
  • Supreme Court rules unanimously that busing of students may be ordered to achieve racial desegregation (April 20, 1971)
  • Boxer Joe Frazier defeats Muhammad Ali at Madison Square Garden (March 8, 1971)
  • After a successful mission aboard Salyut 1, the world's first manned space station, the crew of the Soyuz 11 spacecraft are killed when their air supply leaks out through a faulty valve. (June 30, 1971)
  • Walt Disney World opens in Orlando, Florida (Oct 1 1971)
  • President Nixon makes unprecedented eight-day visit to Communist China and meets with Mao Zedong (Feb. 21–27, 1972)
  • Five men are apprehended by police in attempt to bug Democratic National Committee headquarters Watergate complex—start of the Watergate scandal (June 17, 1972)
This was very interesting to research... thanks for this question.
7. Do you swear? Do you pseudo-swear? (You know crap, shoot, friggin'?) I never swear... I never have. I would never use the Lord's name in vain. I do use shoot once in a while and darn, but I try not to even use those. I have also on occasion said, "Oh, Fudge."

8. Insert your own random thought here. "Sloth makes all things difficult, but industry all easy; and he that riseth late, must trot all day and shall scarce overtake his business at night; while Laziness travels so slowly, that Poverty soon overtakes him. Drive thy business, let not that drive thee; and early to bed, and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise, as Poor Richard says." Quote from Way to Wealth by Benjamin Franklin. I proved this yesterday as I got up later in morning and felt like I could not catch up all day. I didn't get half the things accomplished I had hoped to get done and I ended up exercising at 8 pm writing this post and then heading to bed. Today is another day.

  1. One of my goals is to get up earlier. Your words of wisdom will be a reminder!

  2. One of my students took the Lord's name in vain yesterday in class. He got very angry with me and said the word. Let's just say that it didn't serve him very well in the end. ;)
